Churches of the World

High resolution old and contemporary photographs of places of Worship in Wales (Cymru), United Kingdom.

Wales, Glamorgan, Cardiff, Llandaff Cathedral from the north

Wales, Glamorgan, Cardiff, Llandaff Cathedral from the north

On this website there will be thousands of high resolution photographs of places of worship in Wales. There will be cathedrals, churches, chapels, mosques, synagogues and all other religious places. The smallest church or chapel can be as beautiful as the greatest of cathedrals, not because of its' grandeur, but because of its' simplicity. In their own language Wales is known as Cymru. The counties of Wales are listed in the left and right columns in english and also in welsh.

Many Welsh place names begin with the four letters 'Llan' - this word in the Welsh language translates to church, but also includes the religious enclosure surrounding the church. The Welsh word for a church alone is eglwys. Chapels, which became so much an important part of many welsh lifes during the 19th and early 20th centuries are sadly now too often being sold for use as private dwellings. The Welsh word for chapel is capel.

The present county structure in Wales, which includes Gwynedd, Gwent, Clwyd, Powys, Dyfed, and Mid, South and West Glamorgan are discarded for the purpose of this website, and replaced by the traditional counties, which everyone (certainly in Wales) is more familiar with. It is worth pointing out however that the present county names of Gwynedd, Gwent, Clwyd, Powys and Dyfed are the original names of the some of the Kingdoms within Wales before the Norman conquest.

The Wales site is indexed by county and accessed via the links on this page. Please click on a county name on the side panels and then select a place name.

I already have thousands of old images of churches and other places of worship, so I am confident that given time this site will become a one stop photographic archive that will be of interest to researchers, or those that just like to look at peaceful photographs. It will ultimately become a site of photographic reference and a unique internet resource - with help from the one above.

Because I am from the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the images will be predominantly from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, but I hope you will send in many pictures from your country as well. With your help - and with the help of whoever you concieve to be the 'One' above us all - this site will become the finest photographic archives of places to worship on the internet.

As this site is brand new I have begun by uploading the English Churches pages, and so far - alphabetically - I have finished up to and including the county of London. Yorkshire is also uploaded, as is Anglesey in Wales. When England is completely uploaded, I will continue with Scotland, Ireland and Wales, and then the other countries.

You may select from a place name in the left hand column, or search using the box below - tip: inserting the place name may be the quickest way to find your church.

If you have any pictures of the places of worship of any religion in any country, then please scan your photographs or postcards in at a high resolution, but at least 1280 pixels width, and email them to me here.

Not just a photo of the outside of your place of worship, but of the beautiful things inside, and even of the graveyard, and the interesting tombstones.

In addition, if you want to tell us about your church, then we will display your story with the photographs of the place of worship, so as every visitor to your page may learn and appreciate what your church is about.
